Pre-Registration for First-Year Students

Prior to their initial appointment with Academic Advising in June, incoming first-year students will be pre-registered in at least one course based on students’ field of study interests. Tulane pre-registers students in courses to ensure that those students in more restrictive programs are able to fulfill their first-semester requirements, keeping them on track for their specific degree requirements.

Procedure

  1. Each spring after the deposit deadline, Tulane’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions sends a survey to incoming, first-year students asking them to confirm their field of study, (primary academic interest).
  2. Leading up to first-year student registration appointments, held during the month of June, the Registrar’s Office works closely with Academic Advising to determine which course offerings are best suited for first-year students within specific fields of study.
  3. The Registrar’s Office then works with our CourseLeaf partners and IT to develop logic for pre-registering students based on their primary academic interest.
  4. At the end of May, prior to the start of Advising registration appointments, the pre-registration model will be finalized and students will be automatically registered in a number of courses based on their specific academic interests.

FAQ

How many courses will I be pre-registered in?

The number of pre-registered courses varies depending on the student’s field of study. Some students will be placed in only one course. Other interests require up to four pre-registered courses, and any corresponding co-requisites.

Am I locked into this schedule?

No. Students will have the opportunity to revise their course schedules during their initial appointment with Academic Advising. After all advising appointments have been completed (typically July 1), student registration tickets will reopen and students will be free to make any changes they wish to their schedules.

What if I do not have an Academic Advising appointment?

Please contact Academic Advising if you do not have an initial appointment. Information specifically pertaining to first-year students can be found on the Academic Advising Incoming Students webpage.

Are all first-year students pre-registered in courses?

Some populations of students, such as Honors students and student athletes, may have already had their initial registration appointment with Academic Advising. These students will not pre-registered in any additional courses.
