Pre-Registration for First-Year Students

Prior to their initial appointment with College Advising in June or July, incoming first-year students will be pre-registered in a full-time schedule based on students’ current, primary field of study interest. Tulane pre-registers students in courses to ensure that students in more restrictive programs are able to fulfill their first-semester requirements, keeping them on track for their specific degree requirements.

Procedure

  1. Each spring after the deposit deadline, Tulane’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions sends a survey to incoming, first-year students asking them to confirm their current field of study or primary academic interest.
  2. Leading up to first-year student registration appointments, held during the months of June and July, the Registrar’s Office works closely with College Advising to determine which course offerings are best suited for first-year students within specific fields of study.
  3. The Registrar’s Office then works with our CourseLeaf partners and IT to develop logic for pre-registering students based on their primary academic interest.
  4. By early June, prior to the start of Advising registration appointments, the pre-registration model will be finalized and students will be automatically registered in a number of courses based on their specific academic interests.

FAQ

How many courses will I be pre-registered in?

Most students will be pre-registered in four or more academic courses and required co-requisites. This will generally leave room for an additional class or two for additional major interests, language requirements, or balancing, exploratory courses.

Am I locked into this schedule?

No. Students will have the opportunity to revise their course schedules during their initial appointment with Academic Advising. Registration windows are opened by College Advising on the morning of a student’s scheduled June or July advising meeting. Student access to the registration page will remain open for 72 hours after attending the advising meeting. After 72 hours of access, registration for that student will close until July 15th. At that time, all students will have access to make additional schedule changes through the add period at the beginning of fall semester.

What if I do not have a College Advising appointment?

Information needed to schedule your summer meeting with College Advising will be sent from College Advising directly to students’ Tulane email address in the first week of June. Visit the College Advising Incoming Students webpage for more information. If you are having trouble with accessing the website or making an appointment, email advising@tulane.edu directly.

Are all first-year students pre-registered in courses?

Some populations of students, such as Top Scholars and/or student athletes, may have already had their initial registration appointment with College Advising and successfully registered. Any student already registered will not be pre-registered in any additional courses and are not required to meet with College Advising during the summer.
